5 Tips for Improving Your Website’s Visibility on Google

If you want to get results from your website, you need to make sure it’s easy for potential customers to find you online. Through a process called search engine optimization, or SEO, you can improve your rankings in key search results and give yourself a competitive edge.

Tip 1 | Boost visibility using structured data.

There is so much more to SEO than simply using keywords in your content. To get the best possible result, you also want to use structured data. Structured data is code that is added to your website that helps search engines “read” your site and can improve the way your pages are displayed in search results. There are hundreds of ways to markup your content with structured data. Using Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper tool can help simplify the process for you.

There are some benefits to implementing structured data on your website, including search result enhancements. These enhancements can help you drive additional traffic because they are more appealing to searchers. One simple example is the result of using a title tag and meta description:

  • Title tags. Title tags are HTML elements that specify the title of a web page, providing a quick description of the page’s content. Once set, they will appear as the headline on search engine results pages (SERPs). Typically, the first 50-60 characters of your title tag will show on Google results pages, so make sure you include keywords but keep it concise.
  • Meta descriptions. Like title tags, meta descriptions are HTML elements that appear as part of your listing on SERPs. Meta descriptions are used to summarize the content of a specific page for searchers, and encourage them to click through to your site.

Tip 2 | Spend time doing keyword research.

If you want your website to appear in key search results, then you need to make sure your content is a good match for those key searches. In order to build a more effective SEO strategy, you need to take time to do some keyword research. Doing so will help you pinpoint which specific words and phrases will be the most beneficial.

  • Use online tools to find quality keywords. To help you find the keywords that will be most effective for you, use a free tool such as Google’s Keyword Planner. Using Keyword Planner, you can look at search volume and trends as well as generate new keyword ideas.
  • Look at what your competition is doing. One of the best ways to beat your competition is to learn from them. With your keywords chosen, try searching for them online and check out the first few results that appear. Take a close look at their sites and check out their source code.

Tip 3 | Include high-quality, relevant content.

While you want to make sure that your website is optimized for search engines, you also want to make sure you are putting users first. Your website content should be readable and provide value to visitors. After all, there’s no real benefit to boosting your ranking in search results if your visitors don’t want to stick around to read your content.

Tip 4 | Be strategic with your website structure.

A well-structured site will be easier for users to navigate, but it’s also helps search engines determine the relevancy of a given web page in relation to search queries. Be sure to create dedicated pages for each of your services, and keep them organized by category. For example, if you install roofing and siding, your site structure may look something like this:

Your URLs should also reflect the content on that specific page to help search engines determine the relevancy. Using the example above, the URL for the metal roofing page might be structured like this:

Tip 5 | Be patient.

While SEO is an incredibly-effective way to promote your business, the results are not instant. Implementing successful SEO strategies takes time, energy, and a great deal of patience. Once you put your SEO strategy into action, make sure you are looking at it as a long term commitment. As you monitor your results, you may find that some weeks are better than others. During times when performance seems poor, resist the temptation to change course and follow a new strategy.
