You Don't Want Stock Photography

You can tell right away if a website uses stock photography. I mean, how often do you go to an auto body shop where everyone is beautiful, spotless, and flashing a warm smile full of perfect teeth? And if you see that photo on an mechanic's website, what information does it provide you about the business?

I much prefer to use original photography on websites. Using the mechanic example, original photography can change the dynamic of the site.

First, you get a chance to see what the establishment really looks like. Is it open and airy, or dark and dingy? Does it look professional? This builds trust with the reader, who now is able to get a feel for what the place is really like.

You also get a feel for the people who work there. Running a successful business requires developing positive relationships with customers. Customers want to connect with who they do business with, and having photos of people who actually work at your business can help create a base for these relationships before the customers ever set foot in the store.

And, of course, if you use stock photography, you likely aren't the only business around using that image. If you need proof of this, check out the The Overexposed Model.

But getting original photos is expensive, right? Not necessarily. While scheduling a photo shoot with a professional photographer can become pricey, you don't always need to have a full-scale shoot. If you have a company event, either you or an employee with an artistic eye can snap photos.
