As the co-founder of Triton Commerce and Chief Design Officer, Nick Kelly is undoubtedly a big influence at our small-but-mighty digital marketing and web design agency. Yet, most of our team jokes that they don’t know what Nick does all day, because most of his work these days happens behind the scenes. We finally pinned down Triton’s man of mystery and got him to explain what he’s been up to.
Get to know Nick and learn how he partners with the rest of Team Triton to help small businesses grow and succeed!
Can You Share A Little Bit About Your Background And What Led You To Your Role At Triton?
Prior to Triton, I was in charge of web operations for the ecommerce company my brother (Triton CEO Corey Kelly) had started. Being a small operation, we had to learn how to do everything ourselves, which gave us a well-rounded knowledge of all things related to web design, coding, marketing, and operations.
While we did most of these things ourselves, we grew to a point where we had to bring in outside marketing agencies for help. These agencies charged a lot and provided little value in return. After selling the company, we decided to use the skills we developed running our own business to help other small businesses owners. We wanted to create the agency we wished the others had been for us – that's how Triton Commerce came to fruition.
Tell us a bit more about your role and everyday responsibilities for Triton.
My role at Triton has changed over the years. I've gone from designing and developing every client site to now working mostly on internal Triton projects and developing new offerings and strategies to implement in order to keep Triton Commerce at the forefront of today's marketing landscape, enabling us to provide the best possible results for our clients.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your Position?
My favorite thing about this job is hearing about the results. When we hear from clients that we are making a real difference on their bottom line as a result of the standards, procedures, and strategies we've implemented, it makes everything worth it.
What are some challenges unique to your role?
In our industry, fads come and go. What seems new and cutting edge might look like something we should implement for clients right away. My challenge is tapering excitement and focusing on the realization that sometimes tried and true still provides the best results, and that everything needs to be slowly adopted and thoroughly tested before jumping in.
What's the most valuable thing you've learned since founding Triton?
Play to your strengths. Many people try to compensate for their weaknesses and pay too much attention to what they aren’t great at, instead of doubling down on what makes them special.
Instead of trying to keep my hands in everything here at Triton, I've learned it’s best to hire people that are just better at it than you. Instead, focusing my job on what I'm good at and getting out of the way of everything else.
If you got to trade jobs with anyone on Team Triton for a day, who would it be and why?
I’d be CEO for a day… raises for everyone! Got to be the favorite Kelly brother somehow!
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An NBA basketball player! Short lived after I stopped growing in 7th grade.
What's something else unique or interesting about you that others might not know?
While generally considered quiet by most people at the office, some might not know that you can’t shut me up after a few drinks. You’ve been warned.
What are some of your favorite things to do when you're not working?
I’m pretty simple, you can usually find me hanging out with friends and family, watching a game, or enjoying a day on the golf course.
